# Subtotal Connector

> Connect AI assistants like Claude, Grok, and Muse to your Subtotal purchase data and retailer settings.

## Overview

The Subtotal Connector is how AI assistants connect to Subtotal. Add it to an assistant such as Claude, Grok, or Muse, and you can ask questions about your connections, purchases, items, retailers, products, and brands in plain language, right in the conversation.

The connector can also manage your retailers: the `update_retailer` tool enables or disables a retailer for your team and sets who sees it in Subtotal Link. Everything else it does is read-only.

**Use cases:**

* Analytics copilots that answer questions about customer behavior
* Purchase data Q\&A for support and operations teams
* AI shopping assistants that reference real purchase history

## How it works

The Subtotal Connector is built on the [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/) (MCP), the open standard AI assistants use to connect to outside tools and data. Any assistant that supports custom MCP connectors can use it with this server URL:

```
https://mcp.subtotal.com/mcp
```

Step-by-step setup is available for [Claude](/docs/connector/claude). For other assistants, add a custom connector in that assistant's settings using the URL above.

## Authentication

The Subtotal Connector uses OAuth. When you add it, you sign in with your Subtotal Dashboard account and choose a team, so there are no API keys to manage.

## Security and limits

All queries are scoped to your team: you can only access your own team's data. The following limits apply:

| Constraint | Limit |
| :- | :- |
| Rate limit | 60 queries per minute |
| Row limit | 100 results per request |
| Response size | 5 MB max |
| Query timeout | 5 seconds |
| Allowed operations | SELECT only for `ask`; `update_retailer` enables or disables a retailer and sets its Link visibility |
| Input format | Natural language for `ask` (SQL is rejected); `get_retailers` takes an `include` parameter; `update_retailer` takes `retailer_id` plus optional `enabled`, `link_visibility` and `link_audience` |

## Privacy and support

* **Privacy policy:** [legal.subtotal.com/legal/customers/privacy-policy](https://legal.subtotal.com/legal/customers/privacy-policy) covers what data the connector handles, how it's used and shared, retention, and how to make privacy requests.
* **Support:** email [support@subtotal.com](mailto:support@subtotal.com) with your team name and the question or tool call that failed.
* **Troubleshooting:** if a tool returns an authorization error, disconnect and reconnect the connector (see [Add Subtotal to Claude](/docs/connector/claude)) and confirm your team's access scope in the [Subtotal Dashboard](https://dashboard.subtotal.com).
